Ron Perry stared down “The Beast” again Saturday. The 35-year old veteran runner from Versailles took all the heat, humidity and hills that the Beast of the Southeast 5K Run had to offer, and beat it again, in 16:45. “It’s not getting an easier, that’s for sure,” said Perry, who passed the hometown favorite, 17-year old Anthony Nierlich, for the lead midway through the 3.1-mile course - in one of the brief open areas on the jungle-like cross country course at steamy Denver Siekman Environmental Park. “The weather was awfully tough this time.” He added: “My brother Jeremy (33, of Aurora, sixth finisher in 21:54) and I did a short warmup before the race. We were already dripping wet at the starting line.” Perry, who took his first Beast title as part of a tough weekend double in which he also won Yorkville’s St. Martin’s 5K in 2009, achieved a career milestone in May. He qualified for his first Boston Marathon with a 3:03 finish in Cincinnati’s Flying Pig 26.2-mile event. Brother Jeremy, an ex-Marine, also qualified for Boston. A South Ripley graduate and 15-year employee of Aurora’s Stedman Machine Company, Perry trains 30-35 miles per week, year-round, cross-training with weights. Perry also was the winner of Tri-Kappa sorority’s first annual 5K race (18:27) at Hidden Valley Lake in June.
