The Beast rises again Saturday at Denver Siekman Environmental Park. Beast of the Southeast 5K Run/Walk, the third leg of the Southeastern Indiana Racing Circuit series, is poised for a 9 a.m. start . The lone cross county race in the five-event SIRC-it series - and, by many accounts, the most physically demanding of the five - challenges runners and walkers with its hilly, all-grass course. Although much of the scenic 3.1-mile course, overlooking the Ohio River, is tree-lined and shaded, runners are advised to pack an old pair of cross country spikes, just in case. Entry forms are available at www.weber-sports.com. Pre-race registration is $12, including a t-shirt, $10 for high school runners. Race day entry is $15. The summer racing scedule made its latest stop at Milan on Saturday, July 17. About 8:31 a.m. Saturday, Jeff Mersman could breathe a sigh of relief. Race director for the first annual Lakeside 5K, also track and cross country coach at host Franklin County High School, Mersman had nervously eyed the weather radar earlier that morning. If you were to look at the radar at 6:30 or 7 a.m., Dearborn County was covered with rain or thunderstorms, said the former Indiana State athlete. Thats where a majority of our participants came from. He neednt have worried. Skies cleared over and around Brookville Lake in time for the strong turnout of 140 runners and walkers to start and complete the 3.1-mile Southeastern Indiana Racing Circuit event under fair skies and less-than sweltering conditions. Second of five SIRC-it series races this summer, Lakesides course featured a run up and down the Brookville Dam viewing area. It was better coming down than going up, laughed 5K Run overall champion Hayden Merkel, 16, the areas top high school runner from Batesville. Merkel posted a winning time of 16:45, then waited for the rest of the field to finish. FC sophomore Alan Apsley was second in 18:11. Womens 5K Run champ Pam Noble, 39, of Hamilton, Ohio, placed eighth overall to win her title in 19:44. West Harrisons Bill Cannon, 43, remained unbeaten in summer 5K Walk events, winning Saturdays Lakeside title in 31:45. Annette Meier, 45, scored for hometown Brookville in womens 5K Walk (38:57). Mersman added: To get 140 participants is very respectable for a first-year race. We had great help from our team parents, SIRC-it organizers, Brookville Police and EMS, and the Army Corps of Engineers. We heard a lot of compliments about the event and the course. I hope everyone will come back next year. Views: 239
