The Rising Sun Lady Shiners hit a season best nine 3-pointers and gave the Switzerland County Lady Pacers all they could handle but Coach Wayne Ellegoods girls managed to hold onto a 58-48 win to complete a sweep of the Ruler of the River rivalry series on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Vevay. The Pacers ended a three-game losing streak which started after defeating Rising Sun in the finals of the River Town Classic at South Dearborn. Rising Sun leading scorer Katie Duncan, ORVC Player of the Week, opened the game with a basket and Kayla Kelly hit the first of a career high five 3-pointers to give Rising Sun an early 5-0 lead. Switzerland County answered with a 14-1 run but the Shiners bounced back to stay within seven points for the rest of the half. Kayla always plays well against Switzerland County, said Shiner Coach Jim Jackson. Perhaps thats because of family ties which includes cousin Lindsay Scott. Kelly, a senior, finished with a season high 15 points in her final head-to-head battle against her cousin, who finished with three points. It was the final matchup on the hardwood for the longtime family rivalry. The Pacers led at each stop& 12-6, 22-19, 43-34 and 58-48. Switzerland Countys Kristen Perry finished with a career-high 25 points including 9-of-10 from the free throw line to go with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Duncan scored 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and had 13 rebounds to lead Rising Sun and Kelly was 5-of-6 from behind the arc to account for all of her 15 points. Rising Sun was 9-for-20 on 3-pointers as a team. Senior Teryn Elder added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and six assists for the Shiners with Chelsea Bowman adding two and one each by Kelsey Baillie and Samie Lozier. The Pacers hit 19-for-25 at the free throw line while the Shiners were just 7-for-11. Rising Sun closed out the Ohio River Valley Conference season with a 2-4 record and a fifth place finish. Switzerland County enters the final week of the regular season with a 2-2 ORVC mark with games remaining against Southwestern and Shawe. Rising Sun dropped its third of four straight road games with a 49-42 loss at Morristown on Saturday. Its a game we should have won but we had 31 turnovers, noted Coach Jackson. The 5-13 Shiners were scheduled to play at Madison on Tuesday and close the regular season at home against former Shiner Abby (Carrigan) Friends Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers tonight (Thursday).
