Rising Sun senior Alex Dennis had a career night with nine three
pointers but the Shawe Hilltoppers had a 23 point advantage at the free
throw line to escape with a 69-64 win over the Shiners on Friday, Jan.
29 at Rising Sun.
Dennis, a 3-point specialist throughout his high school career, put
together the effort hed been waiting for after struggling most of the
season with a leg injury. He hit his first five 3-pointers then
reignited in the second half to finish with career high 27 points
(9-for-16 from 3-point range).
The Shiners, still searching for their first home win of the season,
shot a blistering 25-for-28 from the field including 13-for-21 from
behind the arc.
They led 21-17 after one quarter and 32-28 at the half. It was 47-46
with eight minutes remaining.
Shawe drew even twice in the early minutes of the final quarter but
Rising Sun had the answer, first with back to back baskets by Zach Smith
then a 3-pointer by Dennis with 5:17 remaining.
With the Shawe defense now keying on Dennis, regular season leading
scorer Andrew Pulliam (15 points) got on hot to put RS up 64-60 with
2:16 left.
They closed out the game with a 9-0 run including a 3-point play by
Brandon Scroggins after a steal by Michael Kring. It gave Scroggins game
high honors with 28.
Rising Sun set up one final play to get Dennis open for a game tying
shot but Shawe forced him farther out and his shot bounced high off the
rim and fell off where Kring took control and was fouled. He hit both
free throws to seal the game with 18 points (10-for-11 at the line).
The Hilltoppers shot 44 percent and just 1-for-11 from behind the arc.
However, after shooting 44 free throws in a road win at Jac-Cen-Del a
week earlier, the Hilltoppers made 24-for-32 free throws compared to
just 1-for-4 for the host Shiners. They made it to the line by grabbing
a 26-21 rebounding edge including 19 offensive boards.
But thats the game plan for 17th ranked Class A Hilltoppers & solid
defense and get to the free throw line.
In addition to the points at the line, Shawe had 10 steals and forced 19
Shiner turnovers which Coach Jerry Bomholts squad turned into
additional 31 points. The two accounted for 55 of their 69 points.
Zach Smith scored six points, Nathan Hannan five, Trent Pickett and Ryan
Lozier scored four each with Chris Kaeser scoring three.
Kreigh Liggett got his first varsity after consistent improvement in
reserve action. He was hampered by foul problems and did not score.
Starting guard Josh Uhlmansiek joined back up front liner Jordan Walton
on the sideline for this weeks action after injuring his ankle in practice.
Rising Sun traveled to East Central on Saturday and came up on the short
end of a 59-35 decision against the 11-3 Class 4A Trojans.
Cody Kaiser led the Trojans with 16 points including a pair of
3-pointers and two dunks.
Kevin Kidd (fresh off a 35 point effort in ECs win over Columbus East)
had a quiet 11 points while 67 sophomore Logan Jaehnen put in 11
points against the Shiners.
Rising Sun didnt have a player in double figures but had a strong
effort out of Trent Pickett. He scored nine to share team high honors
with Alex Dennis. Andrew Pulliam added eight with Zach Smith scoring
four, Nathan Hannan and Chris Kaeser two and Ryan Lozier one.
The Trojans led 13-7 after one quarter and led throughout. It was 29-17
at the half and 41-27 after three quarters.
The Shiner reserves split their weekend action with a 29-21 win over
Shawe before a 36-26 loss at EC.
Jake Willhite led the Shiners with 15 points including 6-for-6 at the
line against Shawe. Hannan added eight with Nathan Armstrong scoring
four and Alex Oser two.
Willhite had 15 more (11-for-13 at the line) against East Central.
Brandon Turner scored five with Tyler Unger, Alex Oser and Kreigh
Liggett scoring two each.
Seth Fox led the Trojans with 15 points.
Rising Sun hosts Milan on Friday in an ORVC contest then host
Lawrenceburg on Saturday. They travel to Southwestern for a Thursday
night contest next week because of girls sectional action.
