Brave souls and warm hearts are preparing for an icy dip as the 2010 Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Indiana returns for the third year Saturday, Feb. 13, to Versailles State Park. Athletes from Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, Franklin and Decatur counties will benefit from the plunge. All proceeds from this wacky event give these athletes the means to train locally and to compete on the state level in a number of Olympic type sports. Afterward there will be an After Splash Bash at South Ripley Elementary School. Hot meals are free to plungers and volunteers and for $5 for everyone else. There also will be door prizes. The Versailles plunge has some new features this year including a silent auction at the After Splash Bash, a heated main tent at the park and a special Cool School competition to get students involved with the fun. In order to plunge, participants must raise a "bear" minimum of $75. Student plungers may only raise $50 to plunge, but must raise $75 to receive a shirt. Awards will be given in several plunger categories and for raising different levels of pledges. The 2010 Polar Plunge events also feature a new prize, introduced in honor of the Indiana Knights of Columbus continued support of Special Olympics, which includes the District 28 Councils of Aurora, Batesville, Bright, Greensburg, Lawrenceburg and Osgood, sponsors of the Versailles Plunge event. Participants are urged to pre-register online at www.soindiana.org. Walk up registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the boat ramp, located inside Versailles State park, just off U.S. 50 in Versailles. The Polar Plunge will kick off at 1 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies in the heated main tent, featuring a costume contest. Then participants will take to the water. Are you too chicken to plunge?
