The Rising Sun Lady Shiners went 1-2 in Ohio River Valley Conference action this past week but could have been 2-1 with a little help. They opened the week with a 54-51 loss to Southwesterns Lady Rebels then bounced back to defeat sectional foe Shawe, 64-59 on Thursday, before falling to sectional host Jac-Cen-Del, 65-49, on Saturday afternoon. We should have won, Coach Jim Jackson said of his teams effort against the unbeaten league leading Lady Rebels. Katie Duncan scored 16 points to lead Rising Sun, which trailed 19-16 after one quarter before the Rebels pulled ahead 33-24 at the half. Southwestern took a 43-29 lead headed into the final quarter but the Shiners made a final 22-11 run to come up short. Southwestern shot 50 percent from the floor but were just 55 percent (11-for-20) from the free throw line. They were led by Katie McKinley with 17 and Hannah Hardy added 16 points. Senior Teryn Elder added 10 points with Kelsey Baillie scoring nine, Kayla Kelly eight, Megan Pickett four and Kendra Hudson four. Sophomore Kelsey Baillie, who has split time on reserve much of the season, emerged as another scoring threat for the Shiners as she scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first career double-double to lead Rising Sun to a 64-59 overtime win over Shawe on Thursday. Shawe took an early 18-9 lead before the Shiners pulled ahead 30-29 at the half. They nudged ahead 39-36 after three quarters before Shawe banked in a shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Rising Sun could have wrapped up the win in regulation but managed just 25-for-44 from the line. They outscored Shawe 9-4 in the OT period. Megan Pickett added 19 points and Katie Duncan 14, Kayla Kelly five and Samie Lozier four. Our bench came up big, noted Jackson. Samie Lozier hit some big free throws in the first half. Megan did a lot of the little things. Were learning how to play. The Shiners traveled to Osgood on Saturday and gave the Lady Eagles all they could handle for one half, trailing 19-14 and 31-26 at the first two stops before Lady Eagle Becca Wagner got on track to finish with a game high 27 points including 20 in the second half. Baillie led the Shiners with 15 points to finish the week with 46 points and 16 rebounds, averaging 15.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in the three conference games. Duncan finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and capped a 41 point, 37 rebound week including a double double in each game. Pickett added eight points with Elder scoring seven, Kelly three and Chelsea Bowman two. Rising Sun visits Morristown for a varsity only game at 11 a.m. Saturday then travels to Madison on Tuesday before closing out the regular season at home against Lawrenceburg on Thursday, Feb. 4. The 2010 sectional draw is Monday. Views: 552
